Extreme winds leave behind damage in the Quad Cities area

High winds were blamed for wrecks and some property damage in the Quad Cities area Friday, February 19, 2016.

A wind advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, was replaced Friday afternoon with a high wind warning.

“A high wind warning means that sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph, or gusts of 58 mph or more, will occur,” said a statement on the NWS website.  “This can lead to property damage and will make driving very hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles on north-south roads.”

Police on interstates and local highways confirmed numerous crashes involving tractor-trailers and box trucks traveling in and around the Quad Cities area that day.

The highway department reported at 58-miles-per-hour wind gust just after 1 p.m. in Maysville, Iowa.  A 60-miles-per-hour wind gust was also reported Friday afternoon at the airport in Cedar Rapids.  Another report indicated a wind gust reportedly clocked at 62 miles per hour in Moline, Illinois; a 60-miles-per-hour gust in Monmouth, Illinois; and a 56-miles-per-hour gust near Sheffield.
