Drivers battled, and in some cases were overcome by, high winds that were blamed for numerous crashes on highways in Illinois.

State troopers were sent to multiple crashes in Henry, Knox, Mercer, and Rock Island counties during extremely windy conditions Friday, February 19, 2016.

“Crosswinds have pushed multiple vehicles off the roadway causing crashes,” said a statement from Illinois State Police.  “Higher-standing vehicles (semi-trucks/trailers and box trucks) are most affected by these winds.”

Drivers of high-profile vehicles were asked to postpone travel until the wind advisory was lifted Friday evening.

As of 1:30 p.m., troopers were working crashes on westbound I-74 three miles south of the Big X; on westbound I-80 at mile marker 7 in Colona; on U.S. 150 at the Edwards River; and two crashes south of Lynn Center on westbound I-74.
