Firefighters face extra challenge at Low Moor barn fire due to windy conditions

Strong winds blew embers and created spot fires around the scene of a barn fire in Low Moor that proved a challenge for firefighters.

LOW MOOR, Iowa — Windy conditions made for a tough fight against a fire that destroyed a barn in rural Clinton County..

Around 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, a fire broke out at a barn just outside of Low Moor, Iowa.

By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze had engulfed the structure.

According to the fire crew, high wind conditions made the fire much tougher to fight, due to blown embers and spot fires for up to a mile away from the scene.

"We're hoping the field fires are contained now that we had the field finisher run through the fire, it stirred up the dirt and the bean stubble that was on top," Low Moor Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Rick Schmidt said. "Fortunately it was already a combined field, or we could have had a really big deal once it got into the standing corns or the beans; it'd really take off fast in this wind."

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Due to warm and dry conditions, burn bans are in effect in Scott and Clinton Counties.
