Davenport stabbing suspect reportedly knew his alleged victims

After the suspect was captured, police released the identities of a woman who died and a man who suffered life-threatening injuries when they were stabbed.

After he was captured, police said the suspect knew the couple he was accused of stabbing in Davenport, Iowa.

Betty Simmons, 61, died of her injuries and her husband, 52-year-old Jack Simmons had surgery after he suffered life-threatening injuries according to Davenport Police Captain Dale Sievert.

The victims were found in the 1200 block of East 11th Street just before 11 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2014.

Davenport Police said they identified 48-year-old Gary Michael Fortune, whose address was not known, as the suspect in the stabbings. Fortune was charged with first-degree murder, and police issued a public plea for help finding him Tuesday, September 9.

The same night the search was announced, Fortune was found and arrested just after 9 p.m. at Jeronimo’s Bar at 301 West Main Street in Reynolds, Illinois.

The next day, Davenport Police confirmed Fortune knew his victims, but police did not elaborate on how the couple and Fortune were connected.

Fortune was held in the Rock Island County Jail, and he was expected to eventually be extradited to face charges in Scott County.
