Manhunt for Davenport murder suspect ends in bar

Davenport Police were searching for a 48-year-old man wanted in connection with a stabbing that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

UPDATE: Police south of the Quad Cities converged on Jeronimo's Bar in Reynolds, Illinois around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and arrested 48-year-old Gary Fortune after a nearly 24 hour long manhunt across the Quad Cities.

Police in Davenport had issued an arrest warrant for Fortune Tuesday morning after investigators say he stabbed two people late Monday night, killing one of them.

Investigators told News 8 that a barn fire in Reynolds at around 7:00 p.m. brought multiple agencies to the area-- they haven't said what tied the fire to the search for Fortune.

Then, around 9:15 p.m., police converged on Jeronimo's at 301 W. Main Street after a customer saw Fortune's mug shot on TV.

"He came on the television and we looked at each other and said, "Oh my God!" a customer in Jeronimo's at the time told News 8's Brittany Lewis. "We ran out and got the cop, and [Fortune] was sitting out on the back table."

No one was injured during the arrest.

ORIGINAL STORY: Davenport Police were searching for a 48-year-old man wanted in connection with a stabbing that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

The two victims were found in the 1200 block of East 11th Street just before 11 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2014.

The next day, Davenport Police said 48-year-old Gary Michael Fortune was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the case.

Fortune, whose address was not known, was considered armed and dangerous according to Davenport Police Assistant Chief Donald Schaeffer.

“Detectives are asking the public not to take any action but to call 911 immediately if either the vehicle or Mr. Fortune is spotted,” Schaeffer said.

Fortune was last seen in a gray 2001 Chevrolet Blazer with Iowa license plate CEX 285. Fortune is 5-feet 11-inches tall, weighs approximately 215 pounds and has blue eyes and a bald or shaved head. Fortune sometimes wears glasses.

“It should be reiterated,” Schaeffer said, “Mr. Fortune should be considered armed and dangerous.”
