BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A Burlington man accused of using a machete and skateboard to attack his 16-year-old girlfriend has been convicted of kidnapping and willful injury in the case.

Dakota Poland, 21, was found guilty Friday, Nov. 18, of the counts and now faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole, the Hawk Eye reports.

Poland is set to be sentenced on Jan. 6, 2017.

Prosecutors say Poland attacked the girl March 10 when she was moving out of his parents’ home, where she often stayed. Court records say he wouldn’t let her leave and punched and kicked her and used the machete, skateboard and a glass ashtray to inflict more injuries. Poland’s mother intervened, and his father took the girl to a hospital.
