The bill Exelon was relying on to maintain their energy plants did not pass by Illinois lawmakers on Tuesday, May 31.

Known as the Next Generation Energy Plan, the bill is designed to provide clean energy and keep two at-risk nuclear plants from closing in Cordova and Clinton, Illinois.

That date marks the end of the legislative session - a session which also failed to agree on a state budget.

The future of Exelon remains unclear, according to communications manager Bill Stoermer.

"At this time, the future of the Next Generation Energy Plan remains unclear, Stoermer said. "Exelon appreciates the hard work of policymakers, community officials, Exelon employees, labor and business leaders who supported our efforts to advance energy policies that will benefit customers, the economy and environment."

Thousands of Illinois residents went to Springfield on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 to try and convince lawmakers to pass the bill.  The bill was even more important to the future of Exelon after the results of the PJM capacity auction.

Stoermer said they would have more details about future of Exelon in the coming days.
