It’s official: Frank Klipsch joins race for Davenport mayor

On Thursday, April 2, 2015, Frank Klipsch announced he would be seeking the mayor’s seat in November.

The race for Davenport mayor is already heating up.

On Thursday, April 2, 2015, Frank Klipsch announced he would be seeking the mayor's seat in November.

"I'm humbly asking all of you, citizens of Davenport, for the opportunity to serve as your mayor," Klipsch said to a room full of family and community leaders at downtown Davenport's River Music Experience.

Klipsch served as CEO of the Scott County YMCA for 25 years before retiring in December. Thursday, though, he said leadership isn't something you retire from.

"I think it's important that I take the next step, and I think I've got a mandate from my kids and grandkids. If I'm going to walk the talk, then I need to continue with my leadership, and I can't just sit back and say, 'Why doesn't somebody else do it?'" said Klipsch.

During a brief speech, Klipsch noted that many people 'apologize' for living in Davenport. He said he'd like to focus on improving streets and infrastructure, strengthening neighborhoods, and making it easier to do business in Davenport.

He also said big city projects, like a land-based casino, could have been handled differently.

"As a group, let's go forward and make these things happen, as opposed to a battle. Everything doesn't have to be a winner and a loser," said Klipsch.

The announcement sets up a race between Klipsch and current mayor Bill Gluba, who has held the office since 2007. Thursday, Gluba said that it was 'inappropriate' for anyone to announce their candidacy during Holy Week.

"It happens to be that I'm going to Tanzania on a mission trip on Monday, and I'm going to be gone for two weeks. So you put all that together, this was the time, not on Good Friday, not on Holy Saturday and not on Easter, but a time that we could fit in that still allows us to gt to the religious services this week," said Klipsch.

Election day is November 3, 2015.
