A driver accused in a crash that killed two people Sunday, September 28, 2014, in Davenport was at the wheel during another deadly crash five years ago.
Kai Miller, 24, was charged with homicide by vehicle, operating intoxicated and two counts of serious injury by vehicle in the deaths of Andrew Scott Adams, 21, and Danny DeBacker, 22.
In 2009, Miller lost control of his car and struck a tree, killing his 18-year-old passenger and friend, Collin Ingold.
Miller was issued a ticket and plead guilty in July of that year to speeding.
"There was no evidence of impairment by drugs or alcohol. There was evidence he was speeding and was cited and convicted for excessive speed. There was insufficient evidence of reckless driving," Scott County Attorney Mike Walton said in an email to WQAD that contained information about the 2009 case.
Meanwhile, DeBacker's former basketball coach at Blackhawk College said he was devastated by news of his player's death.
"He was a class act, he was just a great kid. He was everything you'd want your son to grow up to be," said Coach Darren Bizarri.
"It's frustrating, it's heartbreaking, and it really makes you angry," Bizarri said.
