Two killed in Davenport crash that police blame on alcohol and excessive speed

Two people died of injuries they suffered when the car they were in was broadsided by another vehicle.

Two people died of injuries they suffered when the car they were in was broadsided by another vehicle.

Davenport Assistant Chief of Police Don Schaeffer said the crash happened at the intersection of 12th and Brady streets shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, September 28, 2014.

Schaeffer said a Hyundai XG was traveling north on Brady Street, at an “excessive rate of speed,” when it broadsided a Hyundai Elantra that was eastbound on 12th Street.

“Based on physical evidence from the scene and multiple witness statements, the excessive speed of the Hyundai XG, as well as alcohol consumption by the driver is believed to be the main contributing factor to the crash,” Schaeffer said.

The driver of the Elantra was killed.  Police initially said the front seat passenger in that car sustained critical injuries and the rear left side passenger sustained serious injuries. One of the injured passengers later died.

Schaeffer said 23-year-old Kai Miller was driving the XG. He was taken to an area hospital, before being arrested for homicide by vehicle OWI, two counts of serious injury by vehicle, and operating while intoxicated.

Miller was held in the Scott County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
