The Quad Cities were getting a round of snowfall over the weekend.
StormTrack 8 forecast a winter storm that would move across the area on Saturday, January 18, 2014 which would bring light to moderate snow amounts.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter weather advisory for the Quad Cities that was set to last from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday. Counties included were Buchanen, Delaware, Dubuque, Benton, Linn, Jones, Jackson, Cedar, Clinton, Muscatine, Scott, Jo Daviess, Carroll, Whiteside, Rock Island, Henry IL, Bureau, Putnam, and Mercer.
Snowfall reports indicated that by 9:30 a.m. 1-3 inches of snow had fallen over east-central Iowa and northwest Illinois. Lighter snow was expected for the afternoon. Around 3 p.m. NWS advised that the snow had ended for most of eastern Iowa.
“Lingering light snow over northwest Illinois the rest of this afternoon should result in additional accumulations less than an inch,” said a spokesperson from the NWS.
Flurries were expected to taper off by 6 p.m. and accumulations could reach 6 inches. Winds were expected to blow from 10 – 15 mph with gusts reaching 20 mph; these winds could cause snow drifting.
Saturday morning, the NWS said roads would be snow covered and slick. Visibility could be affected, and drivers were cautioned to be prepared for slick, snow covered roads.
