The second you receive an alert that you are inside of a tornado warning, you need to take action immediately. As we head into severe weather season in the Midwest, it is always good practice to know what to do in any scenario.
When inside your home, the best place you can be is underground. It could be your basement, an underground storm shelter, etc. If you do not have a basement, the first level of your home or building is the next safest.
You want to find an area that has no windows and is in the inner most section of the building. It could be a bathroom or a closet. It's also a good idea to bring something to help protect your head!
There are instances where you may not be in a building, but in your car! I know that if you see an overpass or underpass, it seems reasonable to take cover there. Unfortunately, there is no good place to keep safe during a tornado on these structures. They can increase wind speeds, throw more debris, and even collapse.
The best thing to do when in a car is to see if you can find a nearby building to go to. Of course, this is not always possible. The best thing to do is find an area that dips down as low as possible... like a ditch.
You want to lay down and flatten yourself as close to the ground as possible. The closer to the ground you are, the slower the winds.
