Going with the 'snow': How some QC residents are 'freezing' the day

News 8 caught up with people as they were out and about Davenport, shoveling, walking and working.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — It started snowing Monday night and just kept coming.

"We've been out here since the sun came up," Drew Duncan with the Downtown Davenport Partnership said. "It's pretty heavy. It's a nice workout for sure."

By 9 a.m. Tuesday, Drew was shoveling out more than five inches in downtown Davenport.

"Once you start moving, definitely got to take the hat off, work up a little sweat, don't want to overdo it," he said. "Take your time definitely for sure."

Delivery driver Ron Mackenzie appreciates when the sidewalks are shoveled clean. He works for Performance Foodservice and was completing several deliveries around town on Tuesday.

"If the snow's not shoveled at all, our wheels get stuck and I'm just dragging the cart, it's not wheeling at all," Mackenzie said.

He said that part is harder than driving in the snow itself and that everybody was happy to get their deliveries.

"It ain't too bad in the snow because it's so heavy, it keeps it sticking down to the ground pretty good," he said. "As long as you take it easy. You definitely don't want to be going fast because you need extra time to slow down."

Jose Velasquez was happy to see the snow. He's an independent contractor as a snow plow driver.

"We've been waiting for this snow since a lot of us are on layoff," he said. "With this big storm, this is what we've all been waiting for, being out here making money."

His day started at 5 a.m. and he was expecting to dig out around 20 businesses.

"Planning on working for a good couple hours until the storm's out of here," Velasquez said. "Hopefully this snow kind of slows down for a bit so I can catch up."

Others were just enjoying the snow. Jan and Fred Lawrence spent the morning taking their six-year-old Swiss mountain dog, Murphy, for a walk through VanderVeer Park. Jan planned to go home and bake.

"It's beautiful. It's not too cold," she said. "I love snow."
