MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — The National Weather Service in Des Moines, Iowa says four tornadoes touched down near Marshalltown, Iowa during the August 10th Derecho event.
Widespread destructive winds tore through the state late that morning and continued through much of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois into the afternoon. A wind gust of 99 MPH was measured at the Marshalltown Airport with an unofficial wind gust of 106 MPH measured just to the east in Le Grand, Iowa. The winds were located between Interstate 80 and Highway 30 throughout much of eastern Iowa.
Using high-resolution satellite imagery paired with aerial drone footage, the Weather Service says four total tornado touchdowns were found embedded within the powerful line of storms.
The first tornado touched down 11:30 am southwest of La Moile in Marshall County. The tornado did not cause any damage to buildings and was given an EF-U, or unknown rating. The tornado traveled roughly one mile.
Another tornado touched down northeast of Minerva, Iowa around 11:36 am traveling just under half a mile in Marshall County. This tornado was also given an EF-U rating.
Moments later a third tornado touched down just northwest of Marshalltown with damage to crops, trees, and houses. Winds were estimated at around 100 MPH giving it a rating of EF-1. No injuries were reported.
The last tornado touched down southeast of Gladbrook in Tama County. This tornado did not cause any major damage and was classified as an EF-U.
At this time no tornadoes have been confirmed in the immediate Quad Cities from this event.
