Airlines offering waivers ahead of Midwest winter storm

The storm is expected to hit on one of the biggest travel weeks of the year.

MOLINE, Ill. — The weather outside is about to get pretty frightful, especially for those who are hoping to catch a flight in or out of the Quad Cities International Airport ahead of Christmas weekend. That's why several airlines are already offering travel vouchers.

As of Tuesday morning, the Quad Cities region is expected to be under a Winter Storm Watch early Thursday morning. Snow is expected to start falling as early as late Thursday morning and continue through much of Friday morning.

StormTrack8 anticipates 3-5 inches across the area, but the wind is expected to pick it up and blow it around Thursday evening and into Friday morning. That's when travel is expected to be at its roughest.

Four airlines come in and out of QC International. Here's what their voucher statuses are as of Wednesday morning.

Allegiant Air

As of this publishing, Allegiant has not issued any waivers for travel. It has issued a travel alert that'll impact QC International from Dec. 21 through Dec. 25.

American Airlines

Those traveling to, through or from QC International via American can have their change fee waived if:

  • They are traveling on an American Airlines flight.
  • They are booked in any fair class, including Basic Economy.
  • They bought their ticket by Dec. 19, 2022.
  • They are scheduled to travel between Dec. 21-23, 2022.
  • They can travel from Dec. 19-30, 2022.
  • They don't change their origin or destination city.
  • They rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference.

American Airlines says changes must be made by Dec. 23 and completed within one year of the original ticket date. The difference in fare may apply.

Delta Airlines

Delta issued its waiver Tuesday afternoon. It'll impact travelers heading in, out and through the Quad Cities from Dec. 21 through Dec. 25.

Tickets must have been reissued on or before Dec. 28 and rebooked travel must begin no later than that same day. Eligibility is only for customers with an original ticket issue date on or before Dec. 20, 2022.

United Airlines

Those traveling to, through or from QC International via United can have their change fee waived if their travel is rescheduled in the originally ticketed cabin, any fare class, and between the same cities as originally ticketed.

Tickets must have been purchased by Dec. 17 with original travel dates between Dec. 21-25, 2022. The rebooking window is between Dec. 18-30. Click/tap here for more details
