BETTENDORF, Iowa — Update:
Bettendorf Police have arrested Deandre McDaniel, 29, in connection with the crash, according to a release from Police Chief Keith Kimball.
Around 6:15 a.m. on Oct. 19, McDaniel drove his car at a high rate of speed eastbound on Middle Road, near 29th Street. Due to excessive speed and wet road conditions, the vehicle lost control, left the roadway, and struck an occupied apartment building at Chateau Knoll Apartments.
According to the release, "When Bettendorf officers approached McDaniel, who had walked away from the accident scene, and made contact with him, at some point he took up an aggressive stance, did not comply and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly thereafter."
There were no injuries reported on the scene. A main gas line for the apartment was struck and MidAmerican Energy was called to respond, along with the Bettendorf Fire Department.
The building's occupants were evacuated and management was assisting tenants with finding temporary housing.
McDaniel is charged with failure to maintain control, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without insurance, and interference with official police acts.
