US 61 reopens following multiple fog-related crashes Wednesday morning

The highway had been closed for two and a half hours after several accidents happened Wednesday morning, according to the Clinton County Sheriff's Office.

DEWITT, Iowa — U.S. Highway 61 has reopened between Maquoketa and DeWitt following multiple fog-related crashes Wednesday morning, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation's 511 website

The website showed that the accident happened just north of Welton. A Twitter thread from the statewide 511 account says it happened just before 9 a.m.

Lt. Brian Votroubek with the Iowa State Patrol told News 8 there were several crashes in that area involving cars and semis.

Later Wednesday evening, the Clinton County Sheriff's Office confirmed at least five accidents happened in total. Authorities were dispatched to the area at 8:28 a.m. Once on scene, they discovered a collision involving three semi tractor-trailers and one passenger vehicle.

Due to the incredibly dense fog, approaching vehicles were not able to clearly see emergency vehicles or workers. As a result, at least four more accidents happened following the initial one, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office reported eight people had been injured in total. Two of them were transported to nearby hospitals while the other six were treated and released at the scene.

Each accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and the Clinton County Sheriff's Office. Other assisting agencies include: DeWitt Police Department, Iowa Department of Transportation-Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Iowa DNR/Conservation, Dewitt Fire Department, Welton Fire Department, Delmar Fire Department, Grand Mound Fire Department, Davenport Hazmat, Genesis Ambulance, Medic, Maquoketa Ambulance and Iowa Department of Transportation- Dewitt Office.
