ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Thump! Scrape! Have you driven over a thunderous pothole lately while you are trying to get somewhere? If so, you're not alone.
When Today in St. Louis' weekly "On the Move" traffic segment announced the unofficial beginning of pothole season, lots of 5 On Your Side viewers reached out with their own pothole stories. They also reported locations to watch out for.
"Look on Manchester Road around 141 and on 141 itself," the driver wrote. "There are so many potholes that they are not being addressed or taken care of. Bad road conditions. Thank you."
That stretch of road at 141 and Manchester in Ballwin has undergone some repairs recently.
On the topic of potholes, David Wrone from St. Louis County Department of Transportation and Public Works said, "There's nothing proactive you can really do about them. You have to wait for the crater to form, which gets exploited by more freezing and thawing and more traffic, thus the pothole."
With all of the new technology out there, why hasn't something been created to better fill those holes more permanently?
"You would think right?" Wrone said. "Even new pavement falls victim. It's incredible. It's just something we expect."
Potholes are everywhere. As frustrating they can be for drivers, filling them and keeping them filled has got to be a huge challenge for crews as well.
If you see spot any troublesome potholes in St. Louis County, you can report them here.
