Car runs red light in Warren County; collision leaves 1 dead, 2 injured

After failing to stop at a light on westbound Highway 34, a driver struck the passenger side of another vehicle making a left-hand turn onto 6th Street.

WARREN COUNTY, Illinois — A two-car collision Monday, July 11 on U.S. Highway 34 left one passenger dead and both drivers injured, according to Illinois State Police.

Shawn P. Rung, 55, of Morris was traveling westbound at about 3:15 p.m. Monday on Highway 34 in Warren County when he failed to stop at a traffic light and struck the passenger side of another vehicle that was making a left-hand turn onto 6th Street, according to state police.

The Warren County coroner pronounced the passenger of the second car, 91-year-old Jack K. Stephens of Monmouth, dead at the scene. The driver, 80-year-old Joy R. Stephens, also of Monmouth, was airlifted to a hospital due to life-threatening injuries.

Runge received non-life-threatening injuries in the collision and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Runge was issued a citation for disobeying a traffic control device.
