Snowy roads cause accidents, delays Monday morning

Central Iowa's first measurable snow of the year caused multiple traffic delays Monday morning.

JOHNSTON, Iowa — Local 5 has issued a Weather Impact Alert for the morning of Monday, Dec. 2 until 9 a.m. These alerts help keep you informed of severe weather that will impact you.

Central Iowa's first measurable snow of the year is causing multiple traffic delays Monday. Local 5 has a crew out on the roads to keep you updated on the latest road conditions. 

As of 8:40 a.m., Iowa 511 reported a 9-minute delay on westbound I-80 between Exit 126 (Douglas Avenue) and US 6 (Urbandale) due to a crash in the left lane. 

In addition, Des Moines police said on X they are currently working 15 crash investigations.

If you're preparing to hit the road, remember these friendly tips for driving in the snow: 

  • Do not use cruise control.
  • During a spinout, turn the wheel in the direction of the spin as you let off the accelerator.
  • Give yourself extra time!

DMPD said that between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. Monday, they responded to 112 total crashes including:

  • 99 property damage crashes
  • Six injury crashes 
  • Seven hit-and-run crashes
