Traffic alert: Upcoming construction projects in the Quad Cities

The area will see several construction projects this week. Here's what you need to know.

MOLINE, Ill. — The Quad Cities is seeing a lot of construction this summer - and many roads and bridges are seeing repairs.

Here are four important construction projects that are happening this week that might affect your commute:

Centennial Bridge closure

Travelers heading between Davenport and Rock Island across the Centennial Bridge will need to find an alternate route if they drive across the bridge between 5:30-7:30 a.m. on Tuesdays.

That's because the bridge will be completely blocked off to traffic on Tuesday, June 27. Of course, that timeframe can change if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Drivers should avoid the area and find alternate routes during this time. The Illinois Department of Transportation urges drivers to pay attention to their surroundings - including posted speed limits - as they travel through the area.

White Construction, LLC will be completing the last phase of the two-year, $1.5 million project while the bridge is closed. Crews will complete structural repairs and bearing replacements to the 80-year-old bridge.

Traffic will reopen once those adjustments are made. Those who walk across the bridge don't have to worry — the pedestrian path will still be open during that time.

The whole project is anticipated to be completed by July 4.

Augustana College walk bridge

Meanwhile, Rock Island Public Works Department announced a portion of 7th Avenue, west of 38th St., will be closed for required maintenance of the Augustana College walk bridge.

Delays are expected to start on Tuesday, June 27, and will remain in effect until Monday, July 3, weather permitting.

Drivers should follow posted detour directions or find alternate routes.

I-80 westbound construction

Additionally, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced crews are set to work on patching potholes in the westbound lanes of I-80 in Rock Island County on Tuesday, June 27.

Crews will be on-site from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. IDOT encourages motorists to allow extra time through the construction or to find alternate routes.

IDOT also wants to remind motorists to pay attention to posted construction speed limits and to minimize distractions while repairs are being made.

These repairs are in conjunction with the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which seeks to improve over 3,500 miles of highway, and nine million square feet of bridge decks over the next six years.

Reopening River Drive

On the other side of the river, road closures and detours have been a mainstay in downtown Davenport in recent months. However, some of them appear to be coming to an end.

As flood waters receded last month, a sinkhole opened up at the intersection of Brady Street and River Drive.

This gape will soon close as crews are wrapping up underground work on the site and will transition to pavement installation in the coming days.

"Based on the DOT specifications for twelve inches of concrete, curing time, and area to be repaved, staff estimates the intersection will not re-open until mid-week the week of June 26," according to Davenport's Communications and Preparedness Manager Robbin Dunn.

Road work continues on the rest of River Drive, as crews are replacing temporary patches from water main breaks. This work is between Warren and Myrtle Streets, and from Marquette to Sturdevant Streets. The stretch between Warren and Myrtle will be head-to-head.

Work began on Monday, June 19, and is expected to be completed by Monday, June 26.

Main Street between 3rd and 5th streets continues to be closed due to the building collapse from May 28. Westbound 4th Street is redirected to Brady Street until further notice. Additional construction updates can be found by clicking/tapping here.

The Quad Cities saw major flooding in the spring, causing Davenport officials to close River Drive on April 21.
