Caitlin Clark breaks NCAA scoring record: Answering top questions about the superstar

Caitlin Clark wasted no time becoming the NCAA women’s career scoring leader, taking less than three minutes to score the eight points needed to smash the record.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Caitlin Clark wasted no time becoming the NCAA women’s career scoring leader Thursday night, taking less than three minutes to score the eight points she needed to break Kelsey Plum’s record.

The Iowa star who has brought unprecedented attention to women's basketball surpassed the record with her signature shot — a 35-foot 3-pointer that hit nothing but the bottom of the net.

And Clark didn’t let up from there. She finished with a career-high 49 points, tied her career best with nine 3-pointers and had 13 assists in No. 4 Iowa’s 106-89 victory over Michigan.

Where is Caitlin Clark from? 

Clark is from West Des Moines, Iowa. She played prep basketball at Dowling Catholic High School, where she was the Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year. Though she didn't win an Iowa high school state championship in high school, she finished her prep career ranked No. 4 on the Iowa high school five-on-five career scoring chart with 2,547 points.

Who is Caitlin Clark's boyfriend?

Clark is dating former Iowa men's basketball player Connor McCaffery. McCaffery is the son of current men's basketball Head Coach Fran McCaffery. McCaffery played six seasons for his father. Though not quite on Clark's level, McCaffery was an integral member of an Iowa squad that reached four NCAA tournament births throughout his career. McCaffery possesses the second best assist-to-turnover ratio in NCAA history with 3.59 assists per turnover.

What year is Caitlin Clark in college?

Clark is currently a senior, having foregone a redshirt season during her freshman year. Though she's already played four seasons She still has another year of eligibility due to the NCAA's decision to give every player affected by the COVID-19 pandemic an additional year of eligibility.

Will Caitlin Clark go to the WNBA?

Fans could be heard chanting following Thursday's game, "One more year!" Iowa fans are calling for one more season from the superstar, but there's widespread speculation that Clark will enter the 2024 WNBA draft following this season's conclusion. If she does declare, numerous mock drafts project Clark to be selected with the first overall pick by the Indiana Fever. But until she officially declares, fans can continue to hope. 

Pistol Pete scoring record

After breaking the NCAA women's scoring record Thursday night, Clark is now moving in on the NCAA all-time scoring record held by "Pistol" Pete Maravich. Maravich scored 3,667 points while playing for LSU from 1967 to 1970. At Clark's current pace of 32 points per game she will break Maravich's record in four games, when Iowa hosts Ohio State Sunday, March 3, in the season finale.

Shirts bearing the motto, "You break it, you own it," were worn by Clark's teammates and family members immediately following the game. There's no doubt that Clark is owning the record that she broke. She shed many happy tears during the post-game celebration and expressed her gratitude for the Iowa fanbase supporting her throughout her journey to breaking the record in a post-game interview.
