Iowa's Ava Jones receives medical disqualification, retires from college basketball

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Ava Jones, a member of the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team, is retiring from basketball under a medical disqualification.

The decision announced by the University of Iowa on Friday allows Jones to remain on scholarship with the team after not being medically cleared to play this past season as a freshman.

In July 2022, Jones and her family were hit by a car while in Kentucky for a basketball tournament. Her dad was killed as a result of the crash, and Ava her mom was severely injured.

Des Moines apparel store RAYGUN later created a line of shirts under an NIL agreement with the Nickerson, Kan. native.

"We wish Ava the best on the road to recovery and fully support the decision she made to step away from the game. She worked tirelessly to get to this point, but she made the best decision for herself and her well-being," head coach Jan Jensen said in a statement.
