CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illinois men's basketball program finds itself in the national spotlight again, securing the 10th spot in the country in this week's AP Poll. Among their Big Ten counterparts, only Purdue stands ahead of them at number two. One of the reasons behind their impressive 17-5 record is 6-foot-6 point guard Ty Rogers, from Saginaw, Michigan, who concluded his high school career at Thornton Township, Illinois.
Rogers' impact on the court has been nothing short of extraordinary, significantly contributing to the team's success. One standout aspect of his performance is his rebounding effort, evident in three games where he achieved double figures. Notably, Rogers secured an impressive 15 rebounds against FDU, 10 against Ohio State and 14 against Nebraska.
Beyond his proficiency on the boards, Rogers has displayed marked improvement in his free throw shooting. He’s shooting 64% this season from the charity stripe, a substantial increase from last year's 39%. This improvement is making him a more well-rounded and valuable asset to the team.
Rogers provided insight into the team's mindset and approach to the remainder of the season. "We know what's at stake," he emphasized. "We try not to look too far ahead because if we do, we won't be able to accomplish what we want to do." This focus on the present and the immediate challenges ahead reflects the team's commitment to maintaining their momentum and achieving their goals.
Rogers also highlighted the competitive nature of the Big Ten and the significance of each game in the conference. "Every game in the Big Ten is a big game," he stated. "You never know what can happen, and at this point in the season, all the teams know what's at stake, so we're all going to play hard."
When asked about his playing style, Rogers conveyed a level-headed approach. "I let the game come to me," he explained. "Taking what the defense is giving me, staying aggressive, and being a monster on the glass."
Finally, Rogers addressed the potential challenge of facing guards rather than traditional centers on defense. "We're used to that," he said. "We know how that goes. Right now, we will prepare as if a five is guarding me. If a guard is guarding me, great; it's going to be a mismatch the other way. We're happy with whatever the defense throws at us." This confidence in their ability to adapt to different defensive strategies showcases the team's versatility.
As the Illinois men's basketball program continues to climb the national rankings, Rogers stands out as a key player driving their success. With his multifaceted skills, commitment to improvement, and team-first mentality, Rogers is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with as the Illini aim for greater success, especially during tournament time.
