CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Update, April 12: The Iowa Department of Public Safety has named the three officers involved in this incident. They are:
- Sergeant Alex Haas
- Officer Emily Habeck
- Officer Skylar Mullins
Iowa DPS said all three officers are cooperating in the investigation.
A man was killed by Cedar Rapids police officers after police said he raised a weapon at them.
According to Cedar Rapids Police, on Saturday, April 6, a suspect called 911 and requested an officer come to his residence on 31st St. NE in Cedar Rapids. Officers said they also received an additional call from a bystander who reported that the suspect was armed with a weapon and making homicidal and suicidal statements.
When officers arrived, they confronted the suspect, who police say was armed. Officers claim they verbally ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but the suspect raised the weapon towards officers. Three officers fired at the suspect, who was struck and declared dead at the scene.
A male bystander who had contacted police was also struck by the gunfire and sustained several gunshot wounds. Police said the bystander was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The deceased suspect has been identified as 40-year-old David Vanderhamm.
The name of the male bystander and hasn't been released.
The Iowa DCI's Major Crime Unit is investigating the shooting. Once that report is made, the results will be given to the Linn County Attorney and Attorney General's Office for review.
