Prison union says FCI Thomson employee exposed to unknown substance, administered Narcan

The staff member was later transported to the hospital, according to AFGE Local Union 4070 President Jon Zumkehr.

THOMSON, Illinois — On Sunday night, a staff member at FCI Thomson was administered Narcan and taken to a hospital after being exposed to an unknown substance, according to the union that represents the prison staff.

FCI Thomson is the federal prison in Thomson, Illinois, and was switched to a low-security facility just last year. Jon Zumkehr, president of AFGE Local Union 4070 which represents the prison's staff, told News 8 that a medical team member had to administer Narcan for another staff member who allegedly came into contact with narcotics. Zumkehr said the substance is unknown pending an investigation. He did not say how the staff member came into contact with the substance or how it made its way into the prison.

Thomson currently houses 2,056 inmates. The federal prison has been riddled with controversy over the years, including hundreds of alleged attacks on staff members and issues over retention pay for employees. You can find News 8's coverage on Thomson here.
