Davenport community gathers for vigils 1 year after the downtown apartment collapse

Dozens of residents shared prayers and song at a church before coming to the collapse site to remember the three victims who died.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — May 28, 2024 marks one year since the Davenport building collapse which claimed three lives and displaced dozens of people.

Memorial services started at Third Missionary Baptist Church at 22 W. 14th St. just a few blocks up the street from the collapse site. 5th Ward Alderman Tim Kelly organized the prayer vigil, which included scripture reading, songs and a chance for community members to openly speak about the collapse.

"Lord help us to support, help us to do whatever we can, not just to remember the lives Father God that were lost, and then remember those who were hurt, but help us Father God as a community," one man said during the prayer service.

Just an hour after that, at 7 p.m., a candlelight vigil was held at 324 Main Street. Dozens of people gathered including several aldermen, police chief Jeff Bladel and mayor Mike Matson.
