SPAM introduces 12th new flavor

The makers of SPAM - Austin, Minnesota-based Hormel Foods - announced it has added a Korean BBQ-flavored variety to its roster of products.

AUSTIN, Minn. — It ain't like the stuff your mom used to make.

Minnesota-based Hormel Foods announced last week that it's offering a new flavor of SPAM product, calling the Korean BBQ flavor "sweet yet spicy."

“SPAM Korean BBQ Flavored is a nod to the relationship the SPAM brand has to Korean food culture and the ongoing celebration of global tastes,” said Jennesa Kinscher, senior brand manager for SPAM. “This new variety not only satisfies the comfort and nostalgia our current fans crave, but it also attracts new fans who are eager to try the sweet and zesty flavors that the Korean BBQ dish and experience offers.”

Hormel said SPAM has been a household staple in Korea since the Korean War, with residents frequently using it in traditional dishes like Budae Jjigae (army stew).

The new flavor comes as Hormel's 12th permanent variety of SPAM, and is described by the company as having a "tangy twist and aroma," that brings a "unique blend of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, paprika and sesame with a hint of spice from gochujang paste" — a Korean fermented red chili paste.

The product is now available both online and in Walmart stores.
