DES MOINES, Iowa —
Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson came in sixth place Monday night during the 2024 Iowa caucuses.
He received just 189 votes, less than 1% of more than 107,000 ballots cast. Hutchison fell behind Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and Ryan Binkley.
Hutchinson failed to gain traction in the polls since declaring his bid for the GOP nomination in early 2023. In the early days of his campaign, the governor’s favorability sat around 2-3% in the state of Iowa. However, it dipped under 1% in late May 2023 and has remained at that level ever since, according to polling data from ABC News’ FiveThirtyEight.
National polls show Hutchinson with similar numbers to the Hawkeye state, consistently sitting around 1% and frequently polling below that. He also failed to qualify for any of the Republican debates.
Hutchinson served as the 46th governor of Arkansas, serving two terms in office. Throughout his campaign, Hutchinson has been a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump and entered the race to serve as "an alternative leader” for the Republican presidential nomination, according to the Associated Press.
"Narrowing that field did not help in terms of weakening Donald Trump, so I think the other voices are important, including myself," he told ABC News in December while campaigning in New Hampshire. "It becomes more urgent, my candidacy, whenever you look at the most recent polls in Iowa. With eight people dropping out of the race, the argument was that somehow that strengthens the opposition [against Trump] but, in fact, Donald Trump's numbers went up...so the voices that are there that provide an alternative message are actually important for success. That is persuasive to me."
As the candidates prepare for New Hampshire’s primary, Hutchinson sits under 1% in the state.
