DES MOINES, Iowa — In the wake of the Perry High School Shooting, a proposed bill would allow Iowa teachers to carry guns inside schools.
House Study Bill 675 would allow trained school employees to carry guns at work. The bill was introduced by House Republicans and the public safety subcommittee recommended the bill's passing on Monday.
If passed, the bill would require school districts with at least 8,000 students to have no less than one private security or resource officer at district high schools. This would require the Davenport Community School District, which has about 14,000 students, to begin utilizing the security measures. The Bettendorf Community School District and other area school districts have fewer students than the bill requires.
The bill would also allow public school employees and also some employees from private schools and colleges to carry a weapon. To carry a weapon, school employees would need to be eligible for a firearm permit and complete several safety trainings.
