Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks aims to defend her seat in Iowa's 1st District

Mariannette Miller-Meeks said crime, the border and inflation are among her top priorities as she competes in another center-stage congressional race.

IOWA, USA — The closest congressional race in 2020 is once again taking center stage in the midterm election.

Iowa's 1st Congressional District race is set between Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democrat State Rep. Christina Bohannan.

Miller-Meeks is hoping for another two years in congress after winning by only six votes during the 2020 election.

"I'm honored to be able to serve," she said. "I've passed 13 bills in the time that I've been in congress, five of them signed at the White House. I hope that the people of the 1st Congressional District will see to reelect me as a bipartisan member of congress."

She said crime, the border and inflation are among her top priorities.

"We need to do something about inflation to lower gas prices, lower food prices, and we can do that by resurgence of energy independence," she said.

The 67-year-old doctor also feels drug costs are at too high of a level.

"I have several bills on lowering prices for prescription drugs," she said. "One is a bio-similar bill to get to a generic insulin. And that can be done; it's feasible, it can happen now. It just requires a little legislative change."

She wants changes to government accountability, such as oversight on the supply chain, healthcare decisions and public safety.

"In our state, we did both police reform, we've also had 'back the blue', and I think we need to be able to encourage our police, hold them accountable, but we also need to support the job that they do every single day protecting us."

The U.S. Army veteran also holds a strong stance being pro-life.

"I would prefer to see this happen at the state level, but at the federal level; no abortions after 15 weeks with exceptions for life of the mother, rape and incest is a policy I think the majority Americans agree with."

Miller-Meeks has held other public positions, including director of Iowa's Department of Public Health and a member of the Iowa Senate.

She now has a home in LeClaire, in addition to a private residence in Ottumwa after the district was redrawn and forced her to relocate within the district coverage area.

Iowa's 1st Congressional District includes southeast Iowa and extends west just south of Des Moines.
