DAVENPORT, Iowa — Scott County canvassed the results from the Iowa House District 81 race on Monday, making the results official and claiming Republican Luana Stoltenberg as the winner over Democrat Craig Cooper.
Stoltenberg is set to take her place as a state representative in January.
However, there are still concerns about how the race and its many recounts were handled.
Scott County Supervisor Ken Croken told News 8's Cesar Sanchez that it has been disappointing to see how the board has handled the situation. He pointed out the issues that Scott County has had with its machines during this election cycle while other counties haven't had many.
Others involved in the recount who declined to go on camera told News 8 that the situation has become confusing for all parties.
Scott County Auditor Kerri Tompkins said she believes the method used for her administrative recount, counting ballots by hand and putting them in bundles of 100, has been the most consistent.
"We have established a process that we feel that showed consistency and that's breaking them in bundles and that's what we explained," Tompkins said on Monday. "So our goal in the future is to do the same thing."
To clarify, Tompkins was in charge of the administrative recount that took place in mid-November. She was not heavily involved in the recent recount that Stoltenberg requested, which took place in late November and early December.
The three board members who were involved in the requested recount declined to comment on the situation, however, they agreed that it has been confusing and frustrating. Each of them said a solution needs to be found.
