SCOTT COUNTY, Iowa — Editor's note: The video above aired on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

A recount in the Iowa 1st Congressional District race between incumbent Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democrat challenger Christina Bohannan began on Friday, Nov. 22.

The recount began at 12:30 p.m. at 1400 Lancer Ct. in Eldridge. According to the Scott County government website, the recount will stop at some point on Friday and resume on Monday, Nov. 25 at 8 a.m.

The Iowa House District 98 recount will also begin on Monday at 8 a.m. In that race, Democratic incumbent Monica Kurth of Davenport currently leads Republican Nathan Ramker by 45 votes out of more than 13,000 cast.

Both recounts are open to the public, but officials said seating space may be limited.

Last week, Bohannan requested a recount in her race against Miller-Meeks. The initial tally puts Bohannan fewer than 1,000 votes — less than a percentage point — behind Miller-Meeks. The contest is a much tighter rematch of 2022 when Miller-Meeks won by seven percentage points.

On Tuesday morning, the Scott County Board of Supervisors voted to conduct recounts for both of the races. The recounts will be conducted by one representative from each political party and a third member agreed upon by both parties. Scott County Auditor Kerri Tompkins said she expects no drastic changes.

"I'm very confident in our numbers," Tompkins said. "We didn't have any problems with our machines, so I don't see anything changing. Normally when things go through a machine, you might find a couple, like one to three, but I don't see anything changing for either one of these."

The other two state races being recounted are near Des Moines. The results must be certified in Iowa by Dec. 2.
