Democrat Cheri Bustos defeated incumbent Republican Bobby Schilling and she will become the next member of congress to represent the 17th Congressional District.
In remarks at about 10:20 p.m. on election night, Bustos called the campaign “vigorous” and acknowledged Schilling’s work in Congress.
She said the campaign was about people on both sides of the political aisle “standing up for what’s right, and we have to recognize that.”
Bustos said she believes it is important that members of both parties work together, “And I have every intention of doing that and I can tell you, the new Democrats who were elected tonight, they will do the same thing.”
