Battle over voting machines goes to court in Rock Island County

Both sides were in court Monday, November 3, 2014, after a lawsuit was filed over allegations of malfunctioning voting machines in Rock Island County, Illinois.

Republicans were suing because they would like all voting machines in the county re-calibrated before the General Election on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.

The lawsuit followed allegations from some voters that their vote was switched from the Republican candidate to the Democratic candidate, while using the touch screens.

Representatives from Rock Island County Clerk Karen Kinney's office previously denied problems with the touchscreen voting machines.

Rock Island County States Attorney John McGehee argued at the November 3 hearing that, even though errors were reported on the machines, votes that displayed incorrectly on the first attempt were corrected before the ballots were actually submitted.

The hearing that began the morning of November 3 continued that afternoon. The judge presiding over the hearing ruled there was not enough proof of a problem with the voting machines to significantly affect the potential outcome of the election, and that there was not enough time before the election to change all available touchscreen voting machines in the county.
