DES MOINES, Iowa — Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear made a stop in Des Moines on Saturday to speak at the Iowa Democrats’ annual Liberty and Justice Celebration.
The Democratic governor has been making national headlines recently for allegedly being one of Kamala Harris’s potential picks for running mate.
During his speech, Beshear called out his potential opponent J.D. Vance for attacking Harris for not having biological children. Harris has two stepchildren: Cole and Ella Emhoff.
“Kamala and I worked on some important initiatives together like when I worked on her initiative to decriminalize marijuana possession in the United States of America,” Beshear said.
Also in his remarks, Beshear mentioned that he worked with Harris when she was California's attorney general and he was Kentucky’s attorney general.
“When you’re a good attorney general like Kamala Harris, you stand up for the people against the most powerful interests,” Beshear said.
Beshear revealed that the vice president gave him a call the day Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race.
“She was just thrust into likely being the president of the United States and the first thing she asked was, ‘how are your kids doing?’” Beshear said.
At a press conference afterwards, Beshear further explained that Harris knows his kids by name and that she asked for his support with her campaign during that phone call.
“She talked about how she was going to earn the nomination. She didn’t want a coronation,” Beshear said. “She personally asked for my help and I heard all I needed in that conversation.”
At the press conference, Beshear was also asked if he would be Harris's running mate if he was offered the opportunity.
“First, I love my job, it is an honor to be the governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” Beshear said. “The only reason I would consider anything else is if I felt like I could help the people of Kentucky more in another position and maybe I can take a little bit of what we’ve done and work it around the United States of America.”
Beshear concluded his speech by encouraging Iowa Democrats to make phone calls, talk to neighbors and knock on doors to elect Harris in November.
The Iowa GOP released the following response to the Iowa Democrats’ event:
"Today, the Iowa Democrats will host their Liberty & Justice event with radical guest speakers such as Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who has been in lockstep with the Biden/Harris Administration and has pushed their woke agenda. Under his tenure as Governor, he has enforced extreme vaccine mandates, allowed rampant illegal immigration and drug trafficking, and has dragged Kentucky to the far-left. He is a privileged, out of touch Governor with an awful track record, and his policies have absolutely no place here. It makes sense the Iowa Democrats look to him as an inspiring figure who fits their radical agenda."
