'It’s devastation': Jacksonville man lends his hometown a helping hand with Helene clean up

George Smiley and his tree cutting crew returned back to his hometown of Alma, Georgia right after Hurricane Helene to help with the clean up.

ALMA, Ga. — All over Florida and Georgia, homeowners are still picking up debris and recovering from Hurricane Helene.

"It’s been an experience you’ve seen people out in their yards crying. It’s devastation," said George Smiley, Owner of Smiley Land & Tree.

Just days after Hurricane Helene swept through the small town of Alma, Georgia. Smiley and his tree cutting team of six set up their gear and got to cutting down trees and cleaning up fallen trees.

"I bought my bucket truck, the tractor and the flatbed with a dump trailer," he said. "When we got here today there were 3 pine trees going all the way across the roof that were down and we lifted them off the roof and here they are in front of you now."

Every morning Smiley has been making the two-hour drive from Jacksonville to his hometown of Alma.

"My whole time ever living here I’ve never seen so much," he said.

While in his truck, he stopped at homes covered in trees to help anyway he can.

"All I’m looking to do is help one person at a time that’s it one person after a person after a person," he said. "Just want to help the best I can."

According to Smiley, the help isn't ending anytime soon.

"The outpouring of thanks and gratitude is beyond anything I could ever imagine and they’re just so thankful and so grateful for us coming from down there to come up here to help."
