Fatal Rock Island shooting victim identified

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Omari Braxton, of Rock Island. A man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to the case.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Rock Island County coroner has identified the man killed in a Rock Island shooting Saturday afternoon.

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Omari Braxton, of Rock Island.

29-year-old Derrick B. Nephew Jr. has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to Braxton's death.

The shooting occurred around 4:45 p.m. Saturday inside the Maple Ridge Apartment complex in the 3700 block of 5th Street.

According to a news release, officers found Braxton in the parking lot with life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

On Saturday evening, Rock Island police obtained an arrest warrant for Nephew Jr. He was arrested in Davenport around 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning. He was transported to the Scott County Jail, awaiting extradition to Illinois. The incident is under investigation.
