Vera French breaks ground on new affordable housing project in Davenport

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Vera French broke ground Thursday on constructing new, affordable housing in Davenport.

Carol's Village Gardens, a four-story, 30-unit apartment building, will be located by Vera French's Carol Center on Harrison Street. Vera French officials said this will "complement the current outreach programs" offered at the center, like helping people with basic needs, assistance with reentering the workforce and social engagement for those recovering from mental illness.

Six of the units will be set aside to specifically help people getting out of homelessness, and other applicants' consideration will be based on income eligibility. A diagnosis is not required for those interested in applying for a unit at the new development.

"We know right now that we need over 6,600 units in the Quad Cities for, you know, for people (at) that very low-income level," Stacey Kiser, executive director of Vera French Housing Development, said. "But that doesn't even speak to middle class and some folks at that upper-income level. We need housing that's affordable for everyone."

Individuals living at Vera French Housing sites receive ongoing support services through the organization's mental health center. The housing application can be found here. Those interested in donating to Vera French Housing can find info on that here
