Dubuque-native, Iowa alum hired as Boeing's next CEO

Dubuque-native Robert Ortberg earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa in 1982.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — A University of Iowa graduate has been tapped to serve as the next CEO of Boeing.

Robert "Kelly" Ortberg earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1982. According to a press release from the University of Iowa, Ortberg has worked in the aerospace industry for 35 years. He's previously served as president and CEO of Rockwell Collins (now Collins Aerospace) and was given the University of Iowa Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 2018.

“Boeing has a tremendous and rich history as a leader and pioneer in our industry, and I'm committed to working together with the more than 170,000 dedicated employees of the company to continue that tradition, with safety and quality at the forefront. There is much work to be done, and I'm looking forward to getting started," Ortberg said in a statement.

Ortberg's first day on the job will be Thursday, Aug. 8.
