United Way's free tax help program starts on Feb. 1

More than 3,300 Quad Citizens received help in 2023, receiving over $3 million in refunds.

BETTENDORF, Iowa — With tax season just around the corner, Quad Citizens who need to get their paperwork in order can get some help right in their backyard.

United Way Quad Cities is offering free appointments to its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program from Monday, Feb. 1 to Friday, April 12. In 2023, 3,301 people got tax help from the program, and those participants received nearly $3.1 million in federal refund dollars.

“Federal tax returns are especially important for households in lower income tax brackets, as that money is often used to help pay for basic needs like food, shelter and utilities or starting an emergency savings fund for unanticipated events like losing a job," Max Bigalk, United Way Quad Cities' VITA coordinator said.

Individuals and families who earned up to $64,000 and live in either Scott County or Rock Island County are eligible to make an appointment. You can review the list of locations below.
