Train collides with semi-truck carrying liquid asphalt in Scott County

A semi-truck carrying liquid asphalt was struck by a train in rural Scott County on Wednesday, causing a spill and road closure.

SCOTT COUNTY, Iowa — A semi-truck carrying liquid asphalt was struck by a train in rural Scott County on Wednesday, Oct. 9, causing a spill and road closure.

The Scott Emergency Communications Center (SECC) received a call notifying them of the crash shortly before 12:30 p.m. Officials found that the semi had failed to stop at a stop sign in the 18300 block of 110th Avenue, just north of West Lake and south of I-80.

Investigators determined that the train struck the rear of the semi, tearing off part of the semi and leading to a liquid asphalt spill onto the road, tracks and ditch.

Officials say the spill is not hazardous and cleanup efforts are currently underway. The road is expected to remain closed until around 6 p.m.

The truck driver was cited for failing to stop at the railroad crossing.
