GENESEO, Illinois -- Two people were taken to the hospital and later died after a pickup and semi collided on Interstate 80 near Geneseo.
The crash happened around 1:50 p.m. on Friday, March 15 in the westbound lanes near Mile Marker 13, two miles east of the I-80/I-280 interchange.
According to Illinois State Police Trooper Jason Wilson, traffic had been slowed because of a separate crash. Both the semi and the pickup were driving in the right lane when the pickup ran into the back of the semi. The crash caused both the driver and passenger to become entrapped in the pickup.
Wilson said both the passenger and driver were extricated from the pickup. The driver was transported from the scene via Medforce and the passenger was transported via ambulance.
The driver, 76-year-old Terry L. Wickey and the passenger, 76-year-old Marjorie A. Wickey both died as a result of the crash, according to a statement from the Illinois State Police. Both Terry and Marjorie were from Kewanee, Illinois.
The driver passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital. The passenger passed away nearly one week later, on Thursday, March 21.
Both westbound and eastbound traffic was stopped briefly. Eastbound traffic resumed after about 15 minutes. The westbound lanes reopened shortly before 5:30 p.m.
