Thoms faces Halpin for IL Senate District 36

After Tuesday, we'll know whether Mike Halpin (D) or Mike Thoms (R) will represent citizens from the QCA from Galesburg to Macomb in the Illinois state senate.

It's finally Election Day in the United States, and results for Illinois' state Senate District 36 race are set to roll in after 7 p.m. Tuesday. 

On the ballot are Democrat Mike Halpin and Republican Mike Thoms. 

Who is Mike Halpin?

Halpin was raised near Albany in the small town of Voorheesville. He began his political career as Congressman Lane Evans' personal aide and district scheduler. Halpin was first elected to office in 2016 as Illinois House District 72 representative. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2020. 

Halpin advocates for bringing tax relief to working families, criminal justice reform that provides additional resources to domestic violence victims, providing greater resources to veterans, creating jobs, balanced budgets, environmental protection, safeguarding women's reproductive rights and greater funding for public education. 

Who is Mike Thoms?

Thoms, a Rock Island-native, has served as mayor of Rock Island since 2017. He previously worked for Thoms-Proestler Co., a family owned wholesale food service based in Rock Island. 

According to his campaign website, Thoms, "has taken a non-partisan, collaborative approach to governing, delivering efficient solutions for the city’s residents and businesses. Mike has worked with stakeholders at the local and state level to make Rock Island a welcoming and growing city. During his tenure, Rock Island has excelled in building public-private partnerships to foster growth in the community, improved communications between the City and its residents, and has charted a path forward that leverages the city’s assets and strengths to increase quality of life for all.
