Try Hockey For Free returns with expanded hours on December 30

Your child can try their hand at hockey with this free, two-hour workshop thanks to the Quad City Hockey Association.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The popular event, Try Hockey For Free, is skating back into the Quad Cities on Saturday, December 30 with expanded hours.

Try Hockey For Free is organized and held by the Quad City Hockey Association. It's a chance for kids ages 4-17 to try their hand at the sport and see if it's something they want to become more involved in.

The event on Saturday, December 30 will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The River's Edge in Davenport.

Kids who have access to hockey equipment are encouraged to bring it. Those that don't are asked to bring a pair of loose-fitting sweatpants or snow pants, a pair of gloves (of any kind, they don't have to be hockey gloves) and a helmet (bike helmets work).

Depending on your child's skill level they'll be paired up with a member of the association who will help them through a series of hockey drills.

Participants must register ahead of time. You can do so by clicking on this link

The event has become so popular that the Quad City Hockey Association is expanding from one hour to two.

Kate Oswald, Community Engagement Director for the association, joined The Current on News 8 to discuss the event's impact and specifically the success in getting girls to come out and try the sport. You can watch her full interview in the above video.
