A Christmas tradition: 'The Nutcracker' takes to the stage in Galesburg

Dancers' Studio in Monmouth has highly-trained students from all over Warren, Knox, Mercer and McDonough Counties. The performance will be Thursday, Dec. 21.

GALESBURG, Ill. — What would the holidays be without a performance of "The Nutcracker" to go see?

This year, Dancers' Studio out of Monmouth, Illinois is putting on a special, one-night-only performance of "The Nutcracker" at The Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg. The show will be Thursday, December 21 at 7 p.m.

All of the performers, with the exception of the actors, have been trained at Dancers' Studio. Dance students with the studio hail from Monmouth, Galesburg, Roseville, Alexis, Little York, Kirkwood and Macomb. 

As owner and director Arlene Smith wrote in an email to News 8, "Our program provides the students with an opportunity to perform in a theatre, in front of a live audience, and we look forward to another successful performance this year!"

One of the 2023 "The Nutcracker" performers and long-time supporter of Dancers' Studio, Julie King, joined The Current on News 8 to discuss the Dec. 21 performance, her favorite part of the show and the importance of fostering art everywhere, especially in the rural Midwest.
