Scott County sheriff, auditor candidates to speak at community forum

The non-partisan group 'Power In Our Numbers' is hosting the free, public forum on September 21, giving voters the chance to meet and chat with the candidates.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Scott County residents are invited to a free, community public forum to meet the candidates running for sheriff and county auditor. Attendees will be able to ask questions and gather information.

The forum will be held at the Scott Community College Urban Campus's Community Room at 101 W 3rd Street in Davenport. Light refreshments will be provided.

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Republican candidate Sheriff Tim Lane and Democrat challenger Lieutenant Thomas Gibbs will be present. Then from 11:10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m., Democrat Matt Trimble and the incumbent county auditor, Republican Kerri Tompkins will have the floor.

The group organizing the forum is known as 'Power In Our Numbers.' It's a non-partisan partnership born from the political action committees from Davenport NAACP Unit 4019 and LULAC Council 10

"[We] decided to bring the community together, to get more involved in advancing those issues that politically we were trying to address," said Frank Holley with Davenport NAACP Unit 4019.

Tim Garcia, member of LULAC Council 10.

"We've been at this for a few years, actually, to get people interested in the election process," Garcia said. "I can't think of a better way to do that than inform them as to who is running for local offices."

One of the event's focuses will be to get attendees registered to vote. Another will be voter education.

"To educate people on who the candidates are, what their platforms are, what they stand for," said Holley. "So when you go out to vote, you know why you're voting for a particular person."

Looking ahead, Power In Our Numbers is also planning a forum for Oct. 12 featuring Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Christina Bohannan, the candidates for Iowa's First Congressional District. The group has also invited Scott County's Board of Supervisor candidates Maria Bribresco (D), Rita Rawson (R) and Ken Beck (R).

All of the forums are free and open to the public.

"We don't care who wins," Garcia said. "We just want people to get involved and be informed."
