DAVENPORT, Iowa — The list of Oscar nominations for the 96th Academy Awards has been released!
To celebrate, The Last Picture House in Davenport is showing three nominated films this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26-28.
They'll be playing the comedy "American Fiction" about a writer whose career has stalled because his works aren't seen as 'Black enough.' When the author publishes a satirical novel under a pseudonym, its immediate success challenges his closely-held worldviews. "American Fiction" earned five Oscar nods, including one for Best Picture.
Also showing is "Poor Things," a science fiction piece around the character Bella Baxter in a feminist spin on Frankenstein. Baxter has been brought back to life by scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, and quickly runs off with a debauched lawyer, Duncan Wedderburn, as she chases the worldliness she's lacking. "Poor Things" was one of the most nominated films of the year, earning 11 Oscar nods including Best Picture.
Finally, TLPH will also be airing a black-and-white version of "Godzilla Minus One." The science fiction film takes a new approach to the Godzilla tale. This Japanese movie follows a 'cowardly' pilot as he tries to save his city and his love from the terrifying monster. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects, making it the first time in Godzilla's 70-year movie career that it's been up for an Oscar.
