New project to research history of Underground Railroad, anti-slavery activities in Muscatine

Residents are invited to learn more about the project at a meeting on Sept. 30 at 6:30. The group is also looking for volunteers to help.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — The Muscatine Historic Preservation Commission recently received a Certified Local Government grant to research the Underground Railroad and anti-slavery activities in Muscatine and throughout Muscatine County.

The goal of the project is to research and document the history in the area and identify places in the county connected to it. The group will start with information previously gathered through the Iowa Freedom Trail Project and by the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Through the research, the Muscatine Historic Preservation Commission will be able to nominate places for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Anyone interested in learning more about the project is invited to a meeting on Monday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Muscatine City Hall. The group is also looking for people interested in volunteering with the project. The public meeting will be followed by training for those wanting to volunteer.
