STERLING, Ill — A QCA teenager is organizing a creative writing conference for teenagers and adults to help attendees improve and manage their mental health.
The "Shine a Light on Mental Health Teen Writers Conference" will be held at Woodlawn Arts Academy on Saturday, August 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Ages 11-18 are invited to participate. Tuition is $45 per person, with lunch provided, and financial assistance is available to those who qualify. To apply, you can download an application here.
During the conference, teenagers will learn how to effectively use multiple forms of creative writing to care for their mental health. Participants will attend creative writing workshops on poetry, fantasy, non-fiction and journalism as well as short stories. Event goers will also learn how to use writing as a tool to manage their own mental well-being.
At the same time, adults who attend the conference can receive their certificate in Youth Mental Health First Aid, at no charge. Attendees to this portion will be equipped with tools to help understand, identify, and respond to signs of mental health and substance abuse challenges among children and teens. Pre-registration is required either in person at Woodlawn Arts Academy, by calling 815-626-4278 or through the academy's website.
The conference was created by local girl scout, Anna Blevins.
"Research shows that mental health is just as important as physical health, and teen mental health is on the decline. The Teen Writers Conference will give teens skills and knowledge to use creative writing for a positive impact on their mental health and well-being,” Blevins said.
She created the conference as part of her Gold Award Project for the girl scouts, in partnership with Woodlawn Arts Academy, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois and NAMI Sauk Area.
